Garden Shed Plans 8×12

Here are some basic plans and considerations for building an 8×12 garden shed:

1. Foundation:

  • Type: You can choose between a concrete slab, gravel base, or wooden skid foundation.
  • Size: The foundation should be slightly larger than the shed (approximately 8’4″ x 12’4″) to provide a stable base.
  • Preparation: Level the ground, compact the soil, and add a 4-6 inch layer of gravel if using a gravel base.

2. Floor Frame:

  • Materials: Use pressure-treated 2×6 lumber for the perimeter and 2x4s for joists spaced 16 inches apart.
  • Flooring: Use 3/4″ plywood or OSB (oriented strand board) for the flooring.

3. Wall Frames:

  • Front and Back Walls:
    • Use 2×4 lumber for the wall studs, spaced 16 inches apart.
    • The front wall should include an opening for a door (standard width is 36 inches).
  • Side Walls:
    • Similar construction to the front and back walls but without door openings.
  • Wall Height: Typically, 8 feet tall, but adjust according to your needs.

4. Roof:

  • Design: A gable roof is a common and simple choice for an 8×12 shed.
  • Rafters: Use 2×4 lumber to create roof rafters. Rafters are typically spaced 24 inches apart.
  • Sheathing: Cover the rafters with 1/2″ plywood or OSB.
  • Roofing Material: Use asphalt shingles, metal, or any other weather-resistant material.

5. Door and Windows:

  • Door: A single or double door is typical. You can build a door frame or purchase a pre-hung shed door.
  • Windows: Include one or two windows for natural light and ventilation. Consider small sliding or fixed windows.

6. Exterior Finish:

  • Siding: Use materials like T1-11 plywood, vinyl siding, or wood planks for the shed walls.
  • Trim: Add trim around windows, doors, and roof edges for a finished look.
  • Paint or Stain: Apply exterior paint or stain to protect the shed from the elements.

7. Additional Features:

  • Ramp: Consider building a ramp if you plan to store wheeled equipment.
  • Shelving and Storage: Plan interior shelving and hooks for tools and garden supplies.

Basic Material List:

  • Pressure-treated lumber (2x4s, 2x6s)
  • Plywood or OSB for flooring and roof sheathing
  • Asphalt shingles or metal roofing
  • Siding materials (T1-11, vinyl, or wood)
  • Nails, screws, and other fasteners
  • Door and window units (if installing)
